The Positive "Pirate" Has a New Book Out 1 week 2 days ago #72

Captain Fanplastic, the world's friendliest plastic battling pirate, has set sail on another adventure in the quest to find true treasure. On his travels he meets a helpful magpie and a friendly cow who lead him and his best friend Fin, the turtle, through the lands of #NoTrashButTreasure.

This is the second book in the Captain Fanplastic series and the story explores the world of plastic trash and what can be done about it in a way that is entertaining and behaviour changing for all who read it. Suitable for all ages this engaging story is aimed at addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and draws attention to goal #12 Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG #14 Life Below Water.

Every year 8 million metric tons of plastic ends up in our oceans due to land-based activities (only 7.1% of waste is currently recycled in South Africa). This waste conundrum is partially due to a lack of environmental awareness, service delivery and understanding of the impacts this waste has. To change the perception that it is ‘ok to litter’ vital education is needed to encourage young people to become custodians of their environment.

Captain Fanplastic is here to teach a new generation vital environmental literacy skills the 5 Rrrrrs: Refuse - Reduce - Reuse - Repurpose and Recycle in order to navigate a #NoTrashButTreasure future.

Notes to the editor: About Captain Fanplastic:
Captain Fanplastic is an environmental literacy programme (online/offline) teaching 8-12 year olds about the impact and value of plastic. It addresses the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) via storytelling, e-learning, gamification, craft, active recycling & litter collection. Our endeavour is to teach a #NoTrashButTreasure mindset.

The programme was launched at the end of 2018 (October) after extensive research had been undertaken to develop a character - Captain Fanplastic - that all children would respond positively to.
The whole programme is based on experiential learning, gamification and activities that include craft and active clean ups and recycling at public venues close to the school’s location. It nurtures a new generation of environmentally literate children by using graphic storytelling, creativity and gamification, educating them about the impact of land based pollution on the marine environment. The learning objective is to create a mindset that plastic waste is #NoTrashButTreasure and how to apply the Captain’s 5 R’s : refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose or recycle it.
