New Report: WWF releases "People's Energy Plan" to get SA off coa

#75
I just received this media briefing from the WWF (in partnership with UCT). It’s a fascinating read, especially since we are all still waiting for the government's official Integrated Energy Plan (IEP), which was supposed to be out ages ago.

Essentially, they have modelled an "Ideal Scenario" where South Africa hits Net Zero.

From the report:

"Our Illustrative People’s Energy Plan maps out how we can realistically achieve a low-carbon, net zero future... Notable features of this scenario include:
  • A rapid and sustained shift away from fossil fuels.
  • An electricity system dominated by renewable energy (wind and solar).
  • No added new nuclear capacity as this will draw resources away from renewables.
  • Gas is playing a limited role as a backup."
What do you think? The report argues against new Nuclear power. Do you agree with that? Can Wind and Solar carry the baseload alone, or is excluding Nuclear a mistake?

(You can read the full methodology on the WWF site here: www.wwf.org.za/our_work/initiatives/illu...peoples_energy_plan/ )
